What Are Alupanel Signs?

Alupanel signs are rigid aluminium composite panels used for indoor and outdoor signage. Their smooth surface, lightweight construction and dimensional stability make them a practical, durable choice for storefronts, property signs, directional graphics and display panels.

Alupanel belongs to the aluminium composite panel family, also called ACP or aluminium composite material, ACM. In North America, the spelling aluminum composite panel is also common. It consists of two aluminium sheets bonded to a polyethylene core. This layered construction provides more rigidity than a thin solid aluminium sheet of comparable weight.

Alupanel is sometimes compared with Dibond, another brand of aluminium composite material used for signs and displays. The names are not specifications, so the panel thickness, skin thickness, finish and core should still be confirmed for each product.

The surface is smooth and flat, supporting sharp printed text, logos, photographs and solid colours. Unlike corrugated plastic, Alupanel has no visible flutes, giving finished signs a cleaner and more permanent appearance.

Alupanel Specifications to Consider

The most important specifications are panel thickness, aluminium skin thickness, weight and surface finish. Available aluminum composite panel specifications vary by supplier and job, so confirm the actual sheet used for your order.

Panel Thickness

Manufacturer literature lists 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm panel thicknesses, although a print provider may stock only selected options.

For typical flat signs, 3mm thickness is a common choice because it balances rigidity, weight and ease of installation. Thicker material may be appropriate for larger panels, unsupported installations or applications requiring additional stiffness. Thickness alone does not make a sign suitable for every structure. Large signs may still require framing, rails or an engineered mounting system.

Aluminium Skins and Core

The manufacturer brochure identifies 0.30 mm aluminium skins as standard and also shows a 0.40 mm option for some thicker panels. The aluminium layers protect the polyethylene core and create the flat faces used for printing or applying graphics.

Skin thickness matters during fabrication. Thicker skins can offer greater resistance to denting and may affect routing, folding and fastening decisions. Product variants can differ, so specifications should not be assumed from the overall panel thickness.

Weight

Alupanel is a lightweight material for a rigid sheet. Manufacturer-listed weights range from 2.9 kg/m² for 2 mm material to 8.79 kg/m² for 8 mm material, with intermediate weights varying by thickness.

Weight affects handling, shipping and mounting hardware. Calculate the finished panel area and confirm the material weight before selecting wall anchors, posts or hanging systems.

Surface and Temperature Properties

Alupanel has a PE paint finish and a smooth, flat face suited to printing and fabrication. Manufacturer literature lists a temperature resistance range of -50°C to +90°C and describes the panel as dimensionally stable.

These properties support many exterior sign applications, but they do not replace site-specific planning. Wind load, fastener placement, building movement and local weather exposure must still be considered. Although aluminium composite signs are sometimes described as weatherproof, their performance also depends on the graphics, edges, hardware and installation.

Printing and Finishing Options

Alupanel signs can be printed directly or finished with applied vinyl, depending on the artwork, quantity and intended use. Direct printing creates a clean sign face, while vinyl can suit specialty films, changeable graphics or particular colour requirements.

A sign may be produced as single-sided when only one face will be visible. Printing on both sides may also be possible when the selected panel has suitable faces and the installation leaves each side unobstructed.

Direct Printing

UV flatbed printing applies ink directly to the panel and cures it during production. This UV print method works well for logos, photographs, gradients, fine text and short-run custom signs.

White areas in the artwork normally use the panel’s white surface rather than printed white ink. White ink may be required for special effects or printing on a non-white face, subject to the printer’s capabilities.

Vinyl Graphics

Printed or cut vinyl can be applied to the Alupanel surface. This method is useful for specialty finishes, reflective films or graphics that may need replacement without changing the complete panel.

Applied vinyl should be selected for the installation environment. Film, adhesive and overlaminate must be compatible with expected UV exposure, moisture and temperature conditions.

Lamination

Add lamination to signs with large dark areas or extensive solid-colour coverage. Dark ink readily shows fingerprints and can scuff during handling, while a laminate film protects the printed face. A matte finish is usually the best option for hiding fingerprints and reducing glare.

Gloss laminate produces richer-looking colours and a reflective surface. Matte laminate creates a softer, lower-glare result that is easier to view under strong lighting. The best choice depends on placement and viewing distance.

Cutting, Holes and Shapes

Alupanel can be produced in standard or custom sizes and cut into rectangles, circles and custom contours. It can also be drilled or routed for mounting holes, but minimum detail sizes and inside corners depend on the cutting equipment and panel thickness.

For contour-cut artwork, supply a clean vector cut path and allow enough material around narrow sections. Small projections and sharp internal corners may be vulnerable to bending or damage.

Alupanel signs work best where a rigid, smooth and professional-looking panel is needed. Their durable, lightweight construction suits building identification, real estate signage, parking information, directional systems and interior displays.

For outdoor use, installation is just as important as the printed panel. A large sign exposed to wind may need a frame or multiple attachment points. Avoid relying on adhesive alone unless the adhesive, substrate and site conditions have been assessed for that purpose.

Alupanel should not automatically be treated as a code-compliant cladding or fire-rated building product. Manufacturer documents reference different fire classifications for PE-core and FR-core products under standards such as EN 13501-1. If a project has fire-code requirements, confirm the precise panel variant, test documentation and local code acceptance before production.

How to Choose the Right Alupanel Sign

Choose an Alupanel sign by matching its thickness, finish, size and mounting method to the installation. A small interior panel has different requirements from a large exterior sign installed high on a building.

Start With the Installation

Identify whether the sign will be inside or outside, wall-mounted, post-mounted, framed or suspended. Also note the installation height, expected wind exposure and whether viewers will see the edges.

If holes are required, provide their diameter and exact centre positions. Do not place important text, logos or borders too close to drilled areas.

Select the Thickness

A panel with 3mm thickness is suitable for many general sign applications. Consider a thicker panel or supporting frame when the sign is large, minimally supported or likely to experience physical contact.

Your printer can confirm printability and fabrication limits, but structural attachment decisions may require an experienced sign installer or engineer.

Plan the Artwork Correctly

Supply artwork at the final size where practical, with linked images embedded and fonts outlined or included. Raster images should have enough effective resolution for the intended viewing distance.

Add bleed beyond the finished cut line so minor cutting tolerances do not leave unprinted edges. The required bleed varies by job, especially for routed shapes, so use the printer’s artwork template or specifications.

Keep text and logos inside a safe area. Borders close to the edge can make small cutting variations more noticeable, even when the panel is within production tolerance.

Review the Proof Carefully

A digital proof shows layout, dimensions, orientation and cut information. It does not perfectly predict the appearance of ink on the physical surface or the colour shown on every monitor.

Check spelling, phone numbers, URLs, finished size, hole locations and cut paths before approving production. For brand-critical colour, discuss physical samples or colour targets rather than relying only on an on-screen proof.

Can Alupanel signs be used outdoors?

Yes. Alupanel is commonly used for exterior signs because it is rigid, smooth and resistant to ordinary weather exposure. Service life varies with sunlight, climate, ink system, lamination, installation and maintenance.

Are Alupanel signs waterproof?

The aluminum composite panel itself does not absorb water like paper-based board, and a properly printed sign can tolerate outdoor moisture. That does not make every finished sign completely waterproof. Cut edges, drilled areas, graphics and attachment components still need to suit the environment.

What thickness should I choose?

A 3 mm panel is a common general-purpose choice for flat signage. Larger or less-supported signs may require thicker material, a frame or structural backing. Confirm the complete installation rather than choosing by thickness alone.

Can Alupanel be mounted to posts?

Yes, but the attachment method must suit the sign size, wind exposure and post system. Bolts, sign clips, rails or a frame may be used. An installer should determine the correct hardware and hole placement.

Does an Alupanel sign need lamination?

Not every sign requires it, but lamination adds surface protection and can make the print more durable. It is especially useful for handled signs, high-contact locations and artwork with dark or solid ink coverage. A matte finish generally provides the strongest fingerprint control.

Is Alupanel the same as solid aluminium?
