What is catalogue printing?
Catalogue printing turns a structured collection of products, services or technical information into a bound, multi-page sales document. The right specification depends on page count, expected lifespan, distribution method and the importance of accurate product colour.
A catalogue can be a compact seasonal booklet, a detailed wholesale line sheet or a substantial annual product book. Unlike a simple flyer, it requires decisions about pagination, cover construction, finishing and navigation as well as paper and print quality.
Good catalogue design helps readers compare products quickly. Consistent image treatment, clear item numbers, visible pricing and a reliable index are usually more valuable than decorative layouts that make information difficult to find. Consistent colours, typography and logos can also strengthen brand visibility without overwhelming the product information.
Choose the finished size and page count first
Finished size and page count affect almost every other catalogue printing decision, including paper consumption, binding, mailing weight and layout. Confirm both before building the final artwork.
Common catalogue formats
Popular finished sizes include:

Standard sizes are often economical because they fit established press sheets and finishing equipment efficiently. A custom size can still work well, particularly for custom catalogs designed around a distinctive product range, but it may create more paper waste or require special finishing.
Before choosing landscape orientation, consider how the catalogue will be stored. Wide catalogues can be effective on a desk but may fit poorly in literature racks and standard envelopes. A smaller booklet format may be more practical for events, counter displays or mailed promotions.
Plan pagination around the finished format
Stapled catalogues are made from folded sheets nested inside one another, so their page counts are normally planned in multiples of four. The outside front cover, inside front cover, inside back cover and back cover all count as pages.
Do not add blank pages at the end without reviewing the layout. Those pages can instead support an index, ordering instructions, warranty information, brand story or contact details.
Perfect-bound page requirements depend on the printer’s imposition, paper stock and production method. Confirm the acceptable page count before finalizing the document.
Select the binding for how the catalogue will be used
Saddle stitch is efficient for thinner catalogues, while perfect binding suits thicker publications that need a square spine. Coil binding is practical for manuals and reference catalogues that should remain open during use.
Saddle-stitched catalogues
This method uses wire staples through the fold. It is a common choice for seasonal collections, short product ranges, trade show literature and promotional catalogues.
As the page count and paper thickness increase, the inner pages can extend farther outward before trimming. This effect is called creep. The printer’s imposition workflow can compensate for it, but important text and product numbers should still stay safely away from trim edges.
Perfect-bound catalogues
Perfect-bound catalogues consist of pages attached to a wraparound cover with adhesive. They provide a flat spine that may accommodate printed text when the spine is thick enough.
A minimum practical thickness is required for reliable construction and readable spine copy. That thickness varies by paper caliper, page count, adhesive and equipment, so confirm it with the printer rather than estimating it from page count alone.
Coil-bound catalogues
Plastic or metal coil allows pages to turn freely and helps the catalogue remain open on a desk. It works well for parts lists, training materials, specifications and frequently consulted reference documents.
Because the punched holes occupy space, layouts need a wider safe margin along the bound edge.
Pick paper that matches image quality and handling
Gloss, matte and uncoated papers each create a different reading and handling experience. Choose paper by considering photography, text density, writing requirements and the catalogue’s expected lifespan.
Coated text stock
C2S means coated two sides. A C2S gloss or silk text stock usually gives product photography sharper detail and more ink holdout than an uncoated sheet.
Gloss paper produces strong colour and contrast, but reflections can make dense text less comfortable to read under direct light. Silk or matte-coated paper offers a quieter surface while retaining good image reproduction. A matte finish can be particularly effective for catalogues that combine detailed photography with substantial product copy.
Uncoated paper
Uncoated stock has a more tactile, natural appearance and is easier to write on. It can suit design-led brands, educational material and catalogues that double as order forms.
Ink absorbs more readily into uncoated fibres, so colours and photographs generally appear softer than they do on coated paper. Adjusting expectations during proofing is better than trying to force a coated-paper appearance onto an uncoated sheet.
Cover construction and protection
A self-cover catalogue uses the same paper throughout. A plus-cover catalogue has a separate, usually heavier cover around the text pages.
Paper weight is commonly expressed in GSM, while some North American cover stocks are described by caliper in points, or pt. GSM measures mass per square metre, while caliper measures thickness. They are not interchangeable.
For covers with large dark areas or solid-colour coverage, consider lamination or another protective coating. Dark ink can show scuffs and fingerprints, while a protective film improves surface durability. Matte film is generally better than gloss for hiding fingerprints.
Manage colour and production method carefully
Catalogue colour should be prepared for the selected press, paper and finishing process rather than judged only from a monitor. A controlled workflow improves consistency across photographs, logos and repeat editions. This is particularly important for custom catalogs that must reproduce established brand colours across several versions.

Digital and offset printing
Digital printing is often practical for shorter runs, versioned catalogues and projects that need quick updates. Offset printing can become more economical for longer runs once setup is distributed across more copies. The crossover quantity varies by job, format, paper and finishing.
Both processes can support full colour printing, but their production workflows, proofing options and economical quantities differ. Required turnaround should be discussed alongside quantity because paper availability, proof approval and complex finishing can affect the schedule as much as the press method.

Prepare catalogue artwork for production
A print-ready catalogue file needs correct page order, bleed, image resolution, colour settings and font handling. Exporting single pages rather than reader spreads is usually the safest approach unless the printer requests otherwise.
File setup checklist
Before submitting the print-ready PDF:
- Build pages at the final trim size.
- Add bleed on every outer edge, commonly 0.125 inch, but follow the printer’s template.
- Keep text, page numbers and logos inside the safe area.
- Export pages individually and in reading order.
- Include the cover in the position requested by the printer.
- Use CMYK images or follow the supplied colour workflow.
- Aim for approximately 300 ppi at final size for standard continuous-tone images.
- Embed fonts and check that fine type remains legible.
- Use rich black only where appropriate, not automatically for small body text.
- Remove dielines, notes and non-printing objects unless required.
A digital proof checks content, page sequence, trim position and obvious file problems. It does not perfectly reproduce paper colour, coating, protective film or the brightness of ink on the finished stock. Match the catalogue specification to its use
The best catalogue is not necessarily the thickest or most heavily finished option. It is the format that survives its intended use while keeping products easy to find and production economical.
A short-lived promotional catalogue may suit stapled construction and lighter coated text. A dealer catalogue used throughout the year may justify a perfect-bound format, a protected cover and more durable interior stock. A technical parts catalogue may benefit from coil, tabs and uncoated pages for notes.
Also consider distribution. Heavier stock, larger dimensions and bulky construction can increase mailing and fulfilment costs. Request a finished dummy or calculate the expected packed weight if postage is a major part of the budget.
