For example, federal Specification 700-720-18 identifies a particular sticker assembly with a base paper substance of 70 ±5 GSM, but that figure applies to that specification rather than every paper sticker (Specification 700-720-18).

Adhesive

The adhesive bonds the face stock to the application surface. Permanent, removable, and specialty adhesives behave differently, so “self-adhesive” alone is not enough information for a production order.

Release liner

The liner protects the adhesive until application. Its weight and release coating influence how easily stickers peel and how well they feed through application or finishing equipment. The liner in Specification 700-720-18 is listed at 60 ±5 GSM, illustrating that liner construction is a measurable part of the finished assembly (Specification 700-720-18).

Selecting Paper, Vinyl, or Film

Paper works well for economical indoor labels, while vinyl and synthetic films are better candidates for moisture exposure, handling, and longer service. No material is universally best, so choose according to the actual application.

Paper stickers

Paper is suitable for product seals, packaging labels, event stickers, mailing applications, and other dry indoor uses. It provides good print reproduction and can be supplied with coated, uncoated, matte, or gloss surfaces.

Paper is generally less resistant to water, tearing, and abrasion than synthetic film. Lamination can improve surface protection, but it does not automatically make the entire construction suitable for prolonged outdoor exposure.

Vinyl and synthetic film

Vinyl and other films are often selected for windows, bottles, equipment, promotional handouts, and outdoor applications. Depending on the stock and adhesive, they can offer better moisture and tear resistance than paper.

Ask whether the proposed film is white, clear, opaque, flexible, or intended for a particular surface. Clear stickers may require white ink beneath parts of the artwork if colours must remain opaque. White ink availability and production requirements vary by job.

Choosing the Right Adhesive

Permanent adhesive is appropriate for lasting identification, while removable adhesive is better for temporary promotions or applications where clean removal matters. Adhesive performance also depends on the surface, temperature, application pressure, and exposure conditions.

Smooth glass, painted metal, corrugated packaging, textured plastic, and low-surface-energy plastics do not behave the same way. Tell the printer exactly what the sticker will be applied to. A physical test is advisable for unusual, valuable, curved, textured, frozen, or frequently washed surfaces.

Adhesive coat weight is part of a stock’s engineered construction. One federal specification calls for 15 ±1 GSM of adhesive in its defined sticker paper, but buyers should not treat that value as a universal target because adhesive formulations and applications vary (Specification 700-720-18).

Functional labels may have additional requirements. UL’s Marking and Labeling Systems program evaluates certain label materials and systems under ANSI/UL 969, while flag and wrap-around constructions may fall under ANSI/CAN/UL 969A (UL Marking and Labeling Systems Program). If compliance is required, confirm the complete recognized label system rather than assuming any printed sticker qualifies.

Sticker Formats and Cutting Options

Choose individual, sheet, or roll stickers based on how they will be distributed and applied. The right cutting style can reduce handling time and make small stickers easier to peel.

Kiss-cut stickers

A kiss cut passes through the face stock but leaves the liner intact. This is useful for sticker sheets, multiple designs on one sheet, and shapes that would be difficult to peel without a surrounding border.

Die-cut stickers

A finished die-cut sticker is cut through both the printed material and liner to create an individual custom shape. Depending on the process, “die-cut” may refer to conventional tooling or digital contour cutting, so confirm whether tooling charges apply.

Sheets and rolls

Finishes and Surface Protection

Lamination provides the most practical added protection against handling, moisture, scuffing, and fingerprints. Gloss, matte, and specialty finishes also change colour appearance and surface feel.

Gloss lamination creates a reflective surface and can make colour appear more saturated. Matte lamination reduces glare and offers a softer appearance, although matte surfaces can sometimes show rubbing or burnishing under heavy handling.

Preparing Sticker Artwork

Supply print-ready artwork with bleed, a safe area, and a clearly defined cut path. Exact bleed and cut-line requirements vary by printer and production method, so use the supplied template rather than guessing.

Build colour artwork in CMYK unless the production instructions specify otherwise. Keep important text and logos away from the cut line, especially on small circles or detailed custom shapes.

For contour-cut work:

  • Use a clean vector path for the cut line
  • Avoid unnecessary anchor points
  • Close the path completely
  • Keep the cut path separate from printed artwork
  • Outline fonts or package the required font files
  • Embed linked images
  • Supply images at suitable effective resolution
  • Indicate whether cut-line guides should be non-printing

Do not estimate finished thickness by adding GSM values as though they were caliper measurements. In one defined federal specification, the complete sticker paper is listed at 134 to 156 GSM, but thickness is separately expressed in microns because weight and caliper are different properties (Specification 700-720-18).

Review the online digital proof for spelling, dimensions, orientation, cut position, and visible content. A digital proof checks the prepared file, but it cannot fully simulate substrate texture, adhesive performance, metallic effects, transparency, or exact colour on every material.

Product labels need different specifications from window decals or promotional handouts. Start with the use case, then select the stock and finish.

  • Packaging seals: Paper or film, depending on moisture and handling
