What Is Impression Alupanel?
Impression Alupanel is printing on a rigid aluminium-composite panel made with two thin face sheets bonded to a central core. It provides a smooth printable surface and good rigidity without being the same as solid sheet aluminium.
The term is often used for Alupanel signs, displays and mounted graphics printed directly onto aluminium composite material, also spelled aluminum composite material and commonly abbreviated as ACM or ACP. Dibond is a well-known brand of this general material, but it should not be assumed that every composite panel has the same construction or performance. The core may contain polymer, mineral material or a mixed formulation, depending on the product.
This layered construction is central to the material’s performance. The metal skins provide the printable faces, while the core contributes thickness and stiffness. European Aluminium’s 2022 fire-safety guide describes the Euroclass scale as having seven primary classes, from A1 and A2 through F (European Aluminium, 2022).
Key Alupanel Specifications to Confirm
The most important specifications are panel thickness, face finish, core type, sheet size and intended environment. These details vary by product and job, so they should be confirmed on the printer’s quote or the manufacturer’s technical datasheet.
Panel Thickness
Alupanel is specified in millimetres rather than paper measures such as GSM or caliper/pt. A 3mm panel is a common option for signs and display work, but available thicknesses depend on the selected product and supplier.
A thicker panel is not automatically the best choice. The correct thickness depends on:
- Finished panel dimensions
- Indoor or outdoor placement
- Mounting method
- Required stiffness
- Wind exposure
- Whether the panel will be routed, folded or fitted into a frame
Large unsupported panels may require a thicker product, additional framing or a different rigid substrate. Confirm structural suitability with the installer for exterior and overhead applications.
Face and Core Construction
The printable face may be coated or pretreated to improve ink adhesion. Surface colour and gloss can also vary. White Alupanel generally supports predictable colour reproduction, while finishes such as brushed silver are chosen when the metallic surface is intended to remain visible within the design.
Core construction matters for more than rigidity. Polyethylene-core ACP is combustible, while fire-retardant and mineral-filled products can achieve higher reaction-to-fire classifications. A panel should never be called fireproof simply because its outer skins are metal.
Sheet Size and Cutting
Available sheet dimensions vary by stock and production equipment. Panels can usually be cut into rectangles or custom contours, subject to the artwork, tooling and minimum feature sizes.
If the design needs holes, slots, rounded corners or routed shapes, include them in a separate vector cut path. Confirm tolerances before creating hardware or components that must align precisely with the printed panel.
Printing and Finishing Options
Alupanel is commonly produced with large format printing equipment and inks suitable for rigid substrates. The appropriate print process, ink set and finishing method depend on the panel coating, image requirements and intended exposure.
At First Press, we print and cut Alupanel in-house in Montreal and ship finished panels across Canada.
Direct Printing
Direct-to-panel printing avoids mounting a separate printed sheet onto the substrate. This creates clean, low-profile Alupanel signs and removes the risk of a mounted paper graphic lifting at the edges.
Colour appearance depends on the face material. Printing on a white face generally provides the most predictable reproduction. Metallic finishes may influence highlights and unprinted areas, so artwork should be prepared specifically for that effect.
An online digital proof is useful for checking content, layout and cut lines. It does not reproduce the exact reflectivity, texture or colour of the physical composite face.
Lamination
Lamination adds a protective film over the printed surface and can improve resistance to handling, cleaning, abrasion and environmental exposure. A laminate may be described as UV resistant when supported by its manufacturer’s documentation, but that does not make the finished sign immune to fading or weathering. Available film types and exposure ratings vary by job.
Add lamination to designs with large dark or solid-colour coverage. Dark ink can show fingerprints and scuffs easily, while a laminate protects the print. Matte laminate is generally the best choice for hiding fingerprints and reducing glare.
Gloss laminate can increase colour contrast and saturation, but reflections may make text harder to read under direct lighting. Matte and low-glare finishes are often more practical for directional signs, menus and exhibition graphics.
Custom Cutting and Mounting Preparation
Alupanel can be cut into simple geometric panels or custom shapes. Depending on the job, mounting preparation may include:
- Drilled or routed holes
- Rounded corners
- Slots for hanging hardware
- Contour cutting
- Panel numbering for installation
- Double-sided printing
- Applied adhesive or mounting accessories
Keep important text and logos away from holes, trimmed edges and routed areas. The required safe margin varies according to the panel dimensions and cutting process.
Common Uses for Printed Alupanel
Impression Alupanel works well for rigid signage and display graphics that need a smooth face, dimensional stability and a professional edge. Typical applications include retail signs, directional panels, property signage, event displays and branded interiors.
Indoor Applications
Indoor uses include reception signs, menu boards, wall graphics, trade show panels and point-of-sale displays. The material’s rigidity allows it to remain flat where paper, cardstock or thin plastic might curl.
For wall-mounted artwork or branding panels, consider how the piece will sit against the wall. Visible standoffs create depth, while concealed mounting produces a cleaner floating appearance.
Outdoor Applications
Alupanel signs are frequently considered for outdoor use because their composite construction is rigid and the faces are not paper-based. Properly specified face sheets are corrosion resistant, but cut edges, fasteners, coatings and local environmental conditions still need to be considered.
Suitability depends on the complete specification, including inks, laminate, panel edges, mounting hardware and expected exposure. Wind load, temperature changes, direct sun and local sign regulations should be reviewed separately. A printed panel that works for a sheltered entrance may not be appropriate for a large elevated installation.
Retail, Real Estate and Events
Retail buyers often use Alupanel for store information, parking directions and durable promotional graphics. Real estate applications can include property identification and directional signage, while event panels may serve as reusable maps, schedules or sponsor displays.
For frequently transported event graphics, protect the corners and printed faces during packing. Although the panel is rigid, its edges and surfaces can still be dented or scratched.
Fire Ratings and Regulatory Decisions
Fire performance must be verified using the exact panel product, core and completed application. The metal faces do not give the full composite panel, printed graphic or installed sign an automatic non-combustible rating.
EN 13501-1 uses classes A1 and A2 through F, with additional designations for smoke and flaming droplets. For example, 2026 manufacturer literature reports B-s1,d0 for one ALPOLIC/fr product (ALPOLIC, 2026). That classification is product-specific and cannot be applied to every Alupanel or Dibond-type product.
The same manufacturer’s 2026 documentation reports A2-s1,d0 for an A2 product, where A2 indicates very limited contribution to fire, s1 is the lowest smoke-production category and d0 indicates no flaming droplets under the classification method (ALPOLIC, 2026).
Printing and finishing introduce more variables. Primer, ink, laminate, adhesive, routing and mounting components may affect the completed assembly. For regulated interiors, façades, public buildings or evacuation routes, request the exact certificate and obtain approval from the relevant architect, consultant or authority.
How to Prepare Alupanel Artwork
Artwork should include bleed, safe margins and clearly separated cut information. Supply files at final size where practical, or clearly state the scale if the panel exceeds your design software’s page limits.
Use vector artwork for logos, text converted to outlines where requested, contour paths and drilled-hole locations. Raster images should have sufficient effective resolution at final output size. The required resolution varies with viewing distance and image content.
Before approving the digital proof, check:
- Finished dimensions and orientation
- Spelling, phone numbers and URLs
- Bleed beyond every trimmed edge
- Safe placement of text and logos
- Cut paths and hole positions
- Single-sided or double-sided printing
- Lamination finish
- Quantity and panel numbering
Frequently Asked Questions
Impression Alupanel orders require decisions about dimensions, finishing, installation and regulatory needs. These answers cover the questions buyers most often need resolved before production.
Is Alupanel solid aluminium?
No. It is an aluminium-composite material made with thin face sheets and a central core. Its weight, stiffness, fabrication and fire behaviour differ from those of solid aluminum plate.
Can Alupanel be used outside?
It can be suitable for many signs exposed to exterior conditions, but suitability varies by product, ink, laminate, mounting method and exposure. Confirm the complete specification for the intended installation rather than relying only on the substrate name.
Does Alupanel need lamination?
Not every job requires it. Lamination is recommended for frequently handled panels, abrasive environments and graphics with large dark or solid-colour areas. Matte laminate is particularly useful for reducing fingerprints and glare.
Is every composite panel fire-rated?
No. Fire performance depends heavily on the core and the tested construction. Ask for documentation that names the exact product, classification standard and certificate applicable to the proposed use.
Can Alupanel be contour cut?
Yes, many designs can be contour cut or routed. Minimum detail sizes, inside corners, hole diameters and cutting tolerances depend on the equipment and panel specification, so confirm them before finalizing the artwork.
Can it be printed on both sides?
Double-sided printing may be available when both faces are suitable for printing. Specify this at quotation because it affects material selection, production planning, finishing and how the panel should be mounted.
