Foam Board vs Sintra Board: Which Rigid Substrate Should You Print On?

Foam board is a paper-faced polystyrene display panel suited for lightweight, short-term presentations. Sintra board is a rigid PVC foam sheet engineered for longer-lasting signage and installations where durability matters more than cost.

These two substrates look similar on a shelf and serve overlapping purposes, but they perform very differently once a print is mounted or applied. Here is what you need to know to choose the right one.


What Each Material Actually Is

Foam Board (Polystyrene Core, Paper Face)

Standard foam board consists of a polystyrene foam core bonded between two layers of clay-coated paper. It is lightweight, easy to cut with a utility knife, and accepts mounted prints cleanly. Most foam board sold for presentations and display work comes in 3/16 in (roughly 5 mm) and 1/2 in (roughly 12 mm) thicknesses.

The paper facing is its main limitation. It dents, absorbs humidity, and degrades if exposed to outdoor conditions for more than a few hours. For indoor use it performs adequately as a short-run display material, but it is not a substrate you should consider for anything that needs to last weeks outdoors or survive repeated handling.

If you need something more durable than paper-faced foam board but lighter than Sintra board, gator board is worth considering. Gator board uses a similar foam core construction but replaces the paper facing with a harder resin surface that resists denting and handles more roughly than standard foam board, though it still falls short of Sintra board for outdoor use or long-term installations.

Sintra Board (Rigid PVC Foam Sheet)

Sintra board is a rigid PVC foam sheet manufactured by 3A Composites. It is available in gauges from 1 mm to 12.7 mm and in sheet sizes up to 60 in x 120 in, which makes it practical for large-format signage, retail displays, and architectural applications (3A Composites USA). Unlike polystyrene foam board, Sintra board has no paper facing. It is a homogeneous closed-cell PVC sheet throughout, which means cut edges are clean, moisture cannot wick in, and it can be routed, shaped, or mounted with hardware.

The closed-cell structure is what makes Sintra board moisture resistant in a way that paper-faced foam board simply cannot match. Water has nowhere to penetrate, so the sheet holds its shape and surface integrity even in humid environments or with brief outdoor exposure.

The mechanical properties of Sintra board support this positioning. Density typically runs 0.55 to 0.60 g/cm3 for standard grades (measured by ASTM D1622), and flexural strength reaches 28 MPa with a flexural modulus of 700 MPa (tested to ASTM D790), according to one published product specification (Laird Plastics, 2025). Water absorption is low, generally at or below 1.0% per ASTM D570. Some grades are also self-extinguishing and rated to ASTM E84 Class A fire performance requirements where building codes demand it.


Side-by-Side Comparison

Weight and Handling

Foam board wins on weight. It is noticeably lighter than Sintra board at equivalent sizes, which matters for trade-show panels that get carried by hand or shipped repeatedly. Sintra board is heavier, but that weight comes with rigidity. A large Sintra board panel holds flat without bowing; a large foam board panel at the same dimensions can flex and corner-dent.

Durability and Lifespan

Sintra board is the clear choice for anything beyond a single event or short-run indoor display. Its construction resists moisture, does not dent from casual contact, and tolerates cleaning. Foam board is disposable by comparison, and most professionals treat it that way.

Outdoor Use and UV Exposure

For outdoor use, the gap between these two materials is significant. Foam board fails quickly when exposed to humidity or rain because the paper face absorbs moisture and separates from the core. Sintra board is moisture resistant and handles short to medium outdoor use far better. That said, direct UV rays are a concern for both materials over extended periods. PVC foam can yellow with prolonged sun exposure, so for any outdoor use that extends beyond a few weeks, UV-stable inks and a UV-protective overlaminate are worthwhile additions regardless of which substrate you choose.

Printability and Finishing

Both substrates accept direct UV flatbed printing and mounted print graphics. Sintra board also accepts vinyl wraps, screen printing, and routing into custom shapes. For either material, large areas of dark or solid color coverage benefit from a protective laminate film after printing. Dark ink on an unlaminated surface scuffs and collects fingerprints quickly, and a matte finish is especially effective at hiding them on pieces that get handled frequently.

Cut, Route, and Fabricate

Foam board cuts cleanly with a straight edge and knife, which is its main fabrication advantage. Sintra board can be cut the same way in thinner gauges, but thicker gauges (6 mm and up) are better handled with a table saw or CNC router. That flexibility makes Sintra board the substrate of choice for shaped signs, letter blanks, and dimensional displays.

Cost

Foam board costs less per sheet. Sintra board carries a higher material cost, which increases further with thickness and sheet size. For a one-day conference backdrop or a short-run presentation panel, foam board's lower cost is hard to argue with. For a retail fixture or exterior-facing sign expected to last a season or more, the cost difference between the two substrates is minor compared to the cost of reprinting and remounting a replacement.

Is Sintra board the same as foam board? No. Foam board has a polystyrene foam core with a paper face. Sintra board is a homogeneous closed-cell rigid PVC foam sheet with no paper facing. They look similar but have very different durability, moisture resistance, and mechanical properties.

Can Sintra board be used outdoors? Sintra board handles short to medium outdoor use better than paper-faced foam board because it is moisture resistant throughout. For prolonged outdoor use, confirm UV-stable inks and consider a UV-protective overlaminate, since the material can yellow under extended direct UV rays.

What thickness of Sintra board should I use for a wall-mounted sign? For most interior wall-mounted signs in the 12 in x 18 in to 24 in x 36 in range, 3 mm to 6 mm Sintra board is common. Larger panels or pieces that need to span mounting points without bowing typically call for 6 mm or 10 mm. Confirm thickness requirements with your printer based on panel size and mounting method.

Does foam board work with direct UV printing? Some foam board grades accept direct UV flatbed printing, but the paper face can introduce adhesion variables and the material remains fragile regardless of print method. Sintra board is the more predictable substrate for direct UV flatbed work.

Should I laminate prints on Sintra board? Lamination is recommended when you have large areas of dark or solid-color ink, or when the piece will be handled frequently. A matte finish reduces fingerprint visibility; a gloss finish adds visual impact. Both protect the ink layer from scuffing.

What is the difference between Sintra board and Forex? Forex is a trade name for a similar rigid PVC foam sheet from a different manufacturer. The materials are functionally comparable and compete in the same signage and display applications. Confirm specifications with your supplier since product lines vary by manufacturer.

How does gator board compare to foam board and Sintra board? Gator board sits between the two in terms of durability. It uses a foam core like standard foam board but has a harder resin surface that resists denting better under everyday handling. It is a reasonable choice for lightweight indoor use where paper-faced foam board feels too fragile but Sintra board is more than the application requires.
