A poster does its job from across the room. Big, bold, and impossible to scroll past, it turns walls, windows, and easels into media space you control. First Press prints posters in rich, saturated colour at our Montreal facility at 9300 Henri-Bourassa Blvd, in three versatile sizes: 8.5" x 11" for bulletin boards and shelf signage, 11" x 17" for storefronts and event walls, and 12" x 18" when you want extra presence without jumping to large format.
From indie venues and cafes to retail chains and schools, posters remain the most cost-effective way to own attention in a physical space.
Customers print posters for concert and event promotion, retail sales and seasonal campaigns, movie and theatre displays, trade show booth graphics, restaurant feature boards, real estate open house signage, school and campus announcements, gym and studio class schedules, and art prints sold or gifted by photographers and illustrators.
Match the size to the viewing distance. 8.5" x 11" works at arm's length on a community board, 11" x 17" reads well across a hallway or from a sidewalk window, and 12" x 18" gives headlines and imagery room to command a wall. When in doubt, go bigger: the cost difference is small compared to the gain in visibility.
Stock and coating shape the effect. 100lb gloss text with AQ coating delivers punchy colour and a light sheen that suits promotions and entertainment. Matte stock reduces glare under spotlights and behind glass, which makes it the better pick for framed prints, menus, and galleries. For posters that will be handled, re-hung, or displayed on easels, a heavier stock such as 100lb cover or 14pt adds rigidity and survives the campaign.
Design at full size in CMYK at 300dpi with 0.125" bleed on every side, and keep text at least 0.25" from the trim. Avoid enlarging small web images, since they soften noticeably at poster scale. Posters cost little per piece, so printing a few extras for replacements is cheap insurance, and quantity breaks reward campaign-size runs. Orders over $200 ship free by ground.
Use 8.5" x 11" for boards and counters viewed up close, 11" x 17" for storefronts and hallways, and 12" x 18" for maximum wall presence. Larger sizes carry headlines farther and fit more supporting detail.
Gloss with AQ coating intensifies colour and suits promotional posters. Matte avoids reflections under direct lighting or glass, making it ideal for framed art prints and upscale interior displays.
Build your file at final size at 300dpi in CMYK. Photos pulled from websites are usually 72dpi and will look blurry when enlarged, so always start from high-resolution originals or vector artwork.
That is where large format takes over. First Press also prints large format posters and banners, so if your design needs to fill a window, a wall, or a stage backdrop, ask us about the next size class.
Always supply a print-ready PDF with at least 1/8 inch (0.125 in) of bleed on every side and crop marks included, built in CMYK. Keep important text and logos at least 1/8 inch inside the trim line so nothing is cut off. If you are not sure how to export it that way, our file preparation guide walks through the exact settings for Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Word. Prefer to design it yourself? Use the personalization option in the upload section to build your artwork right on the page before you order.
