Spiral bound booklet with a plastic coil lying open flat on a clean workspace

About Spiral Bound Booklets

Spiral binding, also known as coil binding, threads a durable plastic coil through closely spaced holes punched along the edge of your pages. The payoff is pure practicality: the booklet opens completely flat, pages rotate a full 360 degrees so the book folds back on itself, and the coil shrugs off daily handling without losing its shape. First Press prints and coils every booklet at our Montreal shop at 9300 Henri-Bourassa Blvd, combining crisp full colour printing with binding built for heavy use.

It is the format of choice for documents people work from, not just read: trainers, chefs, engineers, teachers, and sales teams all rely on it.

Popular Uses

Spiral bound booklets shine wherever hands are busy. Think training manuals and employee handbooks, instruction and maintenance guides, cookbooks and recipe collections, workbooks and study guides, sales playbooks, conference and seminar materials, calendars and planners, and presentation documents that need to lie flat on a boardroom table. Cookbooks especially benefit, since the book stays open hands-free at the recipe you are following.

Tips for Choosing Your Options

8.5" x 11" is the most popular size for manuals and workbooks because it matches standard handouts and leaves room for diagrams; 5.5" x 8.5" makes a handy field guide or planner. Coil colour is typically black for a clean look, and the coil diameter is matched to your page count, so thick documents are no problem.

For covers, 14pt cardstock with matte or gloss lamination stands up to repeated handling, and adding a clear cover or heavier back adds another layer of protection for manuals that live in kitchens, shops, or job sites. Inside, 80lb to 100lb text in matte is easy to read and write on, while gloss serves photo-heavy content.

Prepare a single PDF in reading order, CMYK, 300dpi, with 0.125" bleed. Crucially, keep all text and page numbers at least 0.5" from the binding edge, since the punch holes consume part of that margin. Unlike stitched booklets, spiral books do not require page counts in multiples of 4, which makes late edits painless. Price breaks reward larger runs, and orders over $200 ship free by ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between spiral and Wire-O binding?

Spiral uses a continuous plastic coil that is flexible and very durable; Wire-O uses double loops of metal wire for a more formal, executive look. Both open flat, but spiral tolerates rough handling better.

Does my page count need to be a multiple of 4?

No. Because each leaf is punched individually, you can have any page count. We simply recommend an even count so you do not end with a blank back page unintentionally.

Can spiral booklets lie flat for photocopying or note-taking?

Yes, completely. Pages rotate fully around the coil, so the booklet lies flat and even folds back to a single-page footprint, ideal for workbooks and manuals used at a desk or workstation.

How many pages can a coil hold?

Coil diameters scale with thickness, so spiral typically binds anything from a slim 16 page guide to a manual well over an inch thick. Tell us your page count and stock and we will match the right coil.

How should I set up and upload my artwork?

Always supply a print-ready PDF with at least 1/8 inch (0.125 in) of bleed on every side and crop marks included, built in CMYK. Keep important text and logos at least 1/8 inch inside the trim line so nothing is cut off. If you are not sure how to export it that way, our file preparation guide walks through the exact settings for Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Word. Prefer to design it yourself? Use the personalization option in the upload section to build your artwork right on the page before you order.

Ordered spiral bound booklets for a training manual and they came out great. The coil is sturdy and the pages turn smooth without snagging. Colors were really sharp too. Took a day longer to arrive but honestly worth it. Will prob order again soon.
