Printed styrene sign mounted in a retail store display

About styrene signs

Styrene is a thin, semi-rigid plastic sheet that sits in the sweet spot between a paper poster and a rigid board. It is flexible enough to slide into sign frames, channels, and display rails, yet far more durable than cardstock: it resists moisture, will not tear, and keeps its shape over months of use. The bright white surface gives First Press inks excellent vibrancy and crisp detail.

If you refresh your messaging often, styrene is the smart upgrade from paper. It survives repeated handling and storage, so seasonal signs can be reused year after year instead of reprinted.

Popular uses

Styrene shines in retail and hospitality: shelf talkers and aisle signage, framed promotional posters, menu board inserts, point-of-purchase displays, hanging ceiling signs, lightbox and frame inserts, real estate window cards, and short-term outdoor notices protected from heavy wind.

Tips for choosing your options

Thickness drives how the sheet behaves. A 020 (0.020 in) styrene is light and flexible, ideal as an insert behind glass or inside a frame. The 040 (0.040 in) weight, which matches the standard sheet we stock, is stiffer and can hang or stand with light support, making it the go-to for shelf and counter signage. If your sign must be fully self-supporting, consider a rigid board such as Sintra instead.

Styrene handles humidity well, so it is a great pick for entryways, food service areas, and refrigerated sections. For outdoor use, keep it in a frame or holder, since thin sheets can flex in the wind. For mounting, double sided foam tape, hook-and-loop dots, and magnet tape all pair nicely with styrene on shelving and metal fixtures. Lamination is worth adding for high-touch applications like menus, and double sided printing makes the most of hanging or window-facing positions.

Prepare files in CMYK with 0.125 in of bleed all around. For large prints, 100 to 150 dpi at final size is enough for sharp results. Since styrene is light and ships flat, ordering full campaigns at once is economical, and ground shipping is free over $200.

Frequently asked questions

Is styrene rigid or flexible?

It is semi-rigid. It holds its shape when framed or supported but can flex without creasing, which is exactly what makes it perfect for inserts and channel systems.

Can styrene signs go outside?

Yes, for short to medium terms. The material is waterproof, but because it is thin we recommend mounting it in a frame or holder so wind cannot bend it.

Why choose styrene over a paper poster?

Durability. Styrene resists tearing, moisture, and curling, so the same sign can be handled, stored, and redeployed many times while still looking new.

Styrene, foamboard, or Sintra: which one do I need?

Styrene is the insert and frame specialist. Pick foamboard for light indoor boards on easels, and Sintra when the sign must stand on its own or live outside for years.

How should I set up and upload my artwork?

Always supply a print-ready PDF with at least 1/8 inch (0.125 in) of bleed on every side and crop marks included, built in CMYK. Keep important text and logos at least 1/8 inch inside the trim line so nothing is cut off. If you are not sure how to export it that way, our file preparation guide walks through the exact settings for Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Word. Prefer to design it yourself? Use the personalization option in the upload section to build your artwork right on the page before you order.

Printing both sides? Upload a single PDF with two pages, page one for the front and page two for the back, both the same size with 1/8 inch bleed and crop marks, rather than two separate files. You can merge two pages into one PDF for free with Adobe Acrobat online.

  1. Good quality for store displays

Ordered a batch of styrene for shelf talkers and small posters. Really happy with the quality. The material is flexible but still feels strong. One sign had a tiny bend on the corner but not a big issue. Print looked clean and bright. Works greta for retail.
